Not My Job? Joe Patterson Takes the Easy Way Out, Again

In June, a constituent wrote to Assembly Member Joe Patterson, who represents Placer County, with the following concerns:
“Dear Assembly Member Patterson,
Please tell me where you stand on President Trump sending the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles.
Please also advise me on your position regarding ICE agents taking people off the streets while wearing no badges, no identifiable uniforms, and full-face masks to hide their identities.
I’m fearful when law enforcement acts like vigilantes and arrests people based on the color of their skin. What’s to stop anyone from terrorizing others while claiming to work for ICE?
As your constituent, I want to know where you stand and what you're doing to protect us. I look forward to your response.”
What she received in return was a canned response:
“Thank you for contacting the office of Assemblyman Joe Patterson. We are so grateful for engaged constituents like yourself. Unfortunately, these seem to be federal concerns where our office can not directly take action as the Assemblyman does not debate federal bills. I recommend that you reach out to your congressional representative Kevin Kiley at 916-724-2575. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our District Office for any further questions or assistance at 916-435-0501.”
Either Joe Patterson is lazy, or he does not understand his job. Because there are things he could do, if he wanted to.
At the very least, he could have acknowledged her concerns. But his form letter did not even bother doing that.
He could let her know about SB 627, the “No Secret Police Act,” currently moving through the State Assembly. It would make it a crime for law enforcement officers to wear masks or disguises while on duty, except in specific situations.
“Either Joe Patterson is lazy, or he does not understand his job. Because there are things he could do, if he wanted to.”
He could explain why he did not support AB 49, which would have prohibited school officials from allowing immigration enforcement onto school grounds without proper ID and a warrant, unless it is an emergency.
He could use his oversight authority to ensure immigration enforcement in his district is focused on violent criminals, not targeting law-abiding residents or violating human and constitutional rights.
And lastly, he has a platform. If he can call a reporter and get coverage when the Governor’s office insults him, he can certainly call that same reporter to amplify the frustration and fear of the people of his district.
Instead, Joe Patterson remains silent on the issue even when directly asked; embracing tyrannical policies that directly contradict his promise to protect our liberty and quality of life.
He has made his choice, and it is not with us.
When I decided to run for office, I too made a choice, and I chose my community.
I would support SB 627, and I would have voted yes on AB 49, because we should be able to trust law enforcement, not fear it.
I would advocate on your behalf to make certain your rights are enforced and protected, and use my platform to amplify your voices, not mine.
And most importantly, I would be here for you, listening.
