Call to Action for Palestine - July 24 Peaceful Protest

The term “Leahy law” refers to two statutory provisions prohibiting the U.S. Government from using funds for assistance to units of foreign security forces where there is credible information implicating that unit in the commission of gross violations of human rights (GVHR).

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu last November saying that he, “bore responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the starvation of civilians as a weapon of war and intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population.”

Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have continually voted to appropriate the transfer of offensive weapons to Israel in violation of US and international law and these same weapons are being used to target and kill, health care workers, journalists, artists, poets and every type of civilian.

In the occupied territories of Palestine both members of the Israel Defense Forces and private citizens from illegal settlements on Palestinian land continue to attack and kill Palestinian civilians without any consequences.

Palestinians for generations now continue to be subject to a military court system that denies them any rights whatsoever, while Jewish citizens are privileged to a civil court system that provides them with all the usual civil rights. As a result thousands of Palestinians are tortured in Israel’s military prisons, including hundreds of children who are held for years in prison under administrative detention with no charges or trial. For years the entire Palestinian population in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem have been held in an open air prison under Israel's apartheid system of occupation.

The two teared incarceration system in Israel has far to many similarities to the incarceration for profit system in the US that imprisons a disproportionate number of black Americans. A fact that is not lost on black voters when they look at the support of both Democrats and Republicans for these unfair and cruel systems of incarceration.

Public support in the US for the actions of the state of Israel and for US funding of those actions has undergone the most rapid flip since the change in support for gay marriage a few years ago. A large majority of voters, including many younger Jewish voters, who once expressed support for Israel's actions now are opposed. If Democrats don’t pay attention to this trend and discover a new found respect for ethics they are bound for a future of lost elections.

Sympathy for Israelis among Democrats under 50 swung 71 points since 2017, according to Quinnipiac polling. The group sympathized more with Israelis by 14 points in 2017, yet now sympathizes more with Palestinians by 57 points.
